Indexing service does not start - Event ID 41293

I need a solution

Hello guys,

unfortunately since the weekend our indexing service is not willing to come up. It is failing with event ID 41293.
For sure there are a lot of possible solutions, but none of the troubleshooting digest seem to fit to our case.

We already restarted the service, the server and all further EV servers (3 servers in total, one for FSA, one for indexing, one for mail archiving), but there is no change.

An unexpected error has occurred.

Closed Archive Question

I need a solution

When an archived is closed (which i have 7000 closed archives) do the items still expire out of the archives when expirey runs?  The reason i am asking is because a user / EV admin can't delete items out of closed archives, they get access is denied.  So i am wondering if expirey actually works or not.

Consolidation of Enterprise Vault File Archiving servers

I need a solution

Hi All,

Has anyone successfully consolidated Enterprise Vault file archiving servers? I have an environment with 3 EV servers (EV1 MBX, EV2 & EV3 FSA).

My plan to perform this consolidation is to merge EV3 with EV2. There are 2 options I am considering:

Option 1 - Migration of Indexes, Vault Store and Vault Store Partition

1. Migrate Vault Store using Tech note Article - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH47388 and any necessary partitions relocated from EV2 to EV1.

2. Migrate Enterprise Vault Indexes using tech note article - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH51450

3. Delete old file archiving task on EV3 and recreate new tasks on EV2.

4. Delete EV services from EV3

5. Delete EV3 from Site

6. Point DNS alias for EV3 to EV2 for FSA Placeholders

7 Remove EV3 from AD.

However, I can't find anything in regards to the updating of Placeholder shortcuts in the event of this type of consolidation. Do I need to run FSA Utility to Re-create placeholder shortcuts?

Option 2 - Use Enterprise Vault Building Block fail over

1. Present storage for Indexes and Vault Store partitions of EV3 to EV2

2. Point DNS alias for EV3 to EV2 for FSA Placeholders

3. Execute USL

4. Remove EV3 from AD.

Easier method of consolidating, but does keep EV3 as part of the Enterprise Vault site.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Enterprise Vault SQL Server Fragmentation

I need a solution

Dear All,

  I got the warnning about SQL tables have one or more indexes with a fragmentation level of more than 30%. What should I do? To rebuild index in SQL server? Is there any maintenace task I would need to do on SQL Server?

Synchronize EV Virtual Vault Fails After Outlook 2013

Hi,

I was really hoping if someone would be able to help me resolve this issue.

A user's desktop was upgraded to Office 2013 and since moving to Outlook 2013 his Virtual Vault has disappeared.

I've tried all of the usual, uninstall re-install the EV plug-in. Synchronize mailbox under archive task. Recreate Outlook profile on client.

But every time I try to Synchronize the virtual vault it tells me it has failed.

What's the best way to diagnose this sort of thing? I attempted putting trace on the client but am having a hard time making sense of it.

PST migration policy vs. Mailbox policy

I need a solution

Our PST migration policy is set to archive all message classes.  I checked the log file after migration and it showed a number of items not elgible for archiving because of PST migration policy setting.   All those items are calendar items which are included in the PST policy.  However, our regular mailbox policy does not archive calendar items.  Does it means regular mailbox policy overrides PST migration policy?

Also, we set it to delete PST file after migration.  The PST is not being deleted and the migration status stays as completing.  Is it because of the non-eligble items?  Any way to fix that?

synchronize button missing

I need a solution

Hello,

Can some one help me with issue.

I have an user, where she can not find a synchronize button on her outlook, no Virtual vault too.

This is the issue with only single user.

Troubleshooting steps we performed:

-> Tried to reset EV clinet

-> Tried to create new outlook profile.

-> tried with different PC

E-mails are getting archived and user is able to view the E-mails in archive explorer too.

The only issue is with the Vault.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

EV Imap question

Hi All,

I am rolling out my first Imap configuration for EV in the next week and I just wanted to confirm some infomation.

  1. If you enable Imap internal and dont use the client do the users have "Virtual Vault"? So access to their archived items offline?
  2. External: Does the archive appear on the mobile devices as a seperate profile

Error on provisioning report mode

When I run Provisioning in report mode I get this:

Mailboxes on Exchange Server [SVR-EML-06] that have entries in the Enterprise Vault database but which are not in any provisioning group:

These users doesn't exist anymore. Their AD account was deleted as well as their Exchange mailboxese.

I have opened the MailxBoxEntry table of the EnterpriseVaultDirectory dabase, but they are not there. What can I do?

I'm running EV 9.0.5.

Vault not archiving emails

I need a solution

Im sure this is a very basic question, Im at a Loss here and have no experience with this program so I am not even 100 percent sure what questions to ask. I Have 3-4 users for whom the Vault Archive process has stoped working, They have about half thier allocated email space full, When Draging and droping emails to their individual vault folders and they will not archive When Selecting the files individually in the vault to archive immediately they will either get "stuck" part way through the process. Looking for user side solutions to this problem...

EV 9.0 Exporting restore basket without Exchange

Hi,

We have migrated to office 365 and exported all active email archives from EV to 365. Now we have a standalone EV server that isn't connected to an Exchange server. But we still have an old Journal mailbox in there that we have to use for legacy email searches.
Is there any options to export Search baskets to PST without having to enter Exchange server details?

Can EV Browser search function without an Exchange server?

EV SQL query

hi

We are using EV 8 SP5.

i need a SQL query that gives the total size of an archive. The VS DBs are on a seperate SQL instance to the directory DB so i will need a JOIN in the query somehwere.

How do users apply a retention catagory to an email

I need a solution

Hello

We have a 7 year retention Catagory which is "locked" and is applied to all our users.

we need to set up a new retention catagory for users so they can apply this to specific emails.

I seem to be going round in circles with this so could anyone point me in the right direction.

EVPM folder restrictions

Hello Tech Gurus,

Can you please help me with folder restriction script, I have put in restriction that user cannot delete/move managed folder, however I want to restrict them with rename as well. They should not be able to even rename the folder provided to them.

Please refer to last script I am using :

Windows 2012 Storage Spaces clustering and EV

Hi,

Does anyone know or has anyone tried the new Windows 2012 Storage Spaces (disk clustering) with Enterprise Vault non-clustered implementation.  My client wants to set up 2 EV servers active aqcgtive, hence EV in clustered mode is out and will be using USL.  However they want to use the Storage Spaces solution to replicate disks between the 2 servers so the data is already present before doing the USL.

Any ideas if this is supported or would even work?

Enterprise Vault using guest account

I'm using EV10 SP3, Outlook 2013 and Exch 2010.  We use vault cache and virtual vault on Win8.1, EV server is 2008 R2. 

We are rolling out a new SOE.  I have auditing set up on security logs on EV servers.  I am seeing some interesting behaviour.  Some users have had logon issues, and in the event log I can see the failed logon events.  After a few of these, I get the event saying the local Windows guest account on the server is locked out.  The guest account is disabled by default. 

My question is, what is the releationship between users connecting to EV to synch their vault cache and the EV server's guest Windows account?

Closed Partition Backup question

I need a solution

Our legal department has been very generous with regards to expiry.  Therefore, we have several closed partitons.  We have been backing them up weekly over the weekend.  Over the past month or so the back ups have taken longer and longer.

I'm looking for recommendations on the best option:

1.  Make one last back up of the closed partitions and store it permenantly.

2. Back up  closed partions once a year.

3. Backup closed partitons every six months.

4. Backup closed partitions quarterly.

5. Back up closed partitons once a month.

Indexes and Expiry

Hi,

Question about expiry and indexes.  Does running expiry redue the sizes of indexes also?  I have run expiry on about 13 million emails and watched the storage decrease, but haven't seen the indexes redue at all.  Just wondering if i am missing something here or maybe the indexes reduce at a different time?

User receives "Failed to perform search request" when trying to access items in the PST migration folder in Archive Explorer

I need a solution

I have some issues at a customer's site which I think are all interlinked so I will try to keep this as short as I can.

The environment is EV 9.0.4

Firstly, a user is due to run a workshop and requires some old emails that were migrated from her PST file into EV some time ago. She had an issue yesterday whereby she could access her archive at all but that was down to the firewall on her PC.

Everything was fine but now any mails she tries to access in her PST migration folder returns the Failed to perform search request error, yet items in her inbix open fine.

I have tried to zap her archive but get the following error:

No matter what I change, it doesn't work.

I have since had a look at her archive on the server (the display properties assigned to mailbox) and have found that there are no policies assigned to it, in fact I have randomly checked other archives (including my own) and have found that all of them are not displaying any provisioning groups etc. at all!

Now a few days ago, the SQL DBs were moved to a new server and technote https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH35744.html was followed. Initially confirmation was all good but we did receve a few calls from users who were having difficulties with archvies which eventually seemed to sort itself out. What I have noticed is that even opening up the archiveexplorerui.asp page from the server itself takes an inordinate amount of time to open even during quiet periods. Haven't timed it but it proabably takes around 1-2 minutes just to display the contents of an archive let alone trying to open an item.

Something else I have nioticed is that events 13395 and 13397 are being logged regarding connectivity to the old SQL server and not the new one. I have rechecked all the settings for the vault stores as well as the ODBC settings and all of them are poting to the new SQL server.

I have tried to export the affected user's archive, but get the following in the export log file:

  Export of archive ,(user name removed) failed.
  Reason: The data necessary to complete this operation is not yet available.

Tried it on my archive and got the same result.

To add to all of this, the data is written to an EMC Centera which has collections enabled and we are having ongoing issues with that as we often get event 6761 being logged which appears to be an issue reading from the Centera however we are engaging with EMC on that as it has been a problem from quite some time and the collection staging area is huge.

So in a nutshell what I would like to ask is:

What can I do to get the user to be able to access her PST migrations archived mails as well as reinstating the polices to the mailboxes and to solve the event 13395 and 13397 issues?
